Report: PS6 will have an optional disc drive!

The PlayStation 5 turns five years old in November, and talk about the yet-to-be-announced PS6has begun picking up lately. One idea that the proposed successor console could reportedly adopt from the current PlayStation hardware generation is a detachable disc drive.

According to Insider Gaming, having a detachable disc drive will allow Sony to reduce production and shipping costs of the PS6. This is also seen as a way to protect the company during "uncertain times", likely a reference to ongoing turbulence in the market brought on by US president Donald Trump's tariffs.

Essentially, this will allow consumers to choose between either a PS6 with a disc drive--a more traditional option--or a cheaper digital model that they can later upgrade with the add-on. In comparison, the PS5 console first launched with either a built-in disc drive or an all-digital model, and people who bought the more affordable console had no option for upgrading at the time with an add-on accessory. This changed when the slimmer PS5 console revision was introduced, and last year's launch of the PS5 Pro did not include a disc drive at all--although one can still be attached to it.

Several years into the current console generation, hardware has only gotten more expensive over time. In Europe, the PS5 Digital Edition has reportedly been hit with shrinkflation as the internal SSD is being reduced from 1TB to 825GB. Earlier this year, Sony announced price increases for Digital and Standard Edition PS5 consoles across Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, and in August, the price of all PS5 console models in the US increased by $50 due to a "challenging economic environment" Sony said at the time.

One other thing that we do know about Sony's next console is that the company will continue to rely on hardware over cloud technology. Back in June, Sony president and CEO Hideaki Nishino said that while cloud gaming continues to progress, consumers still prefer the "local execution" of games that comes from physical media or content downloaded directly to the console itself.

Thoughts, SW? Does this surprise you? There were people out there who were suggesting the PS6 wouldn’t have a disc drive at all. I didn’t believe that one bit. There are still a lot of people who buy physical games, even if we’re in the minority. So we’re not dead yet!

@SolidGame_basic: I believe Sony will wait and see what MS does first. So Sony will have an optional disc drive all planned out, but when MS announce the next Xbox won't have a built in or optional disc drive Sony will then copy them, allowing for MS to take the heat for it first.

Not really surprised at that suggestion. It’s just someone speculating on what Sony may/could do with the PS6 anyway. It would be an optional add on and I feel those don’t really do too well. Publishers might not be all that eager to put out a physical version of a game for an optional add on either.

You know things aren't looking good for physical media when an optical drive is viewed as a perk and not a given 🤣

Personally I think the cord should be cut and physical media just done away with, but that would leave the more rural parts of the world in a bad spot so I definitely support a disc drive as an add-on accessory.

Stock units should be drive-free, though. Save on cost, material, weight, and so forth. Might even be able to install some more hardware (bigger graphics card, memory, etc) in there as a result, making for a better console overall.

They should had a 32x type peripheral. Let's go full circle.

They should 100% without reservation kill optical drives. That shit needs to die. Time to move on to more modern storage devices and make them to order for the folks who want physical copies.

I wish those add-ons never stopped. It was the coolest shit to me. Even the RAM carts we saw on the Saturn and N64. Bring that stuff back! I want the next Xbox console/PC whatever to have like a removable GPU bay where you can upgrade it every couple years. That way they don’t have to release Pro consoles.

I literally said add-on drives should be an option for people in rural parts of the world (or those that prefer it). I'd hate to deprive some farmer in the middle of Nebraska of a game because his satellite internet caps at 5GB or whatever unreasonable limit they put on those poor bastards.

I haven't bought physical games since Mafia 3 released in 2016. I use to have a few Uncharted 4, Arkham Knight, Doom, Ni No Kuni 2 though went digital. My younger brother would borrow my games and trade them. PS6 having the option to have the disc drive is great if it keeps the console below $600.

outside of a few exceptions, peripherals don't tend to get mainstream support.. reducing physical media support to an add-on would be the beginning of the end of physical media..

I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. What's more: I suspect the price of the disc drive will be quite steep. Significantly more than a standard blu-ray drive. Think of it as an entrance fee for being able to buy used games.

Console makers would prefer that you buy from the relevant store.

Who knows: Maybe Sony and MS will implement some sort of game license trade facility in their next systems....but I wouldn't bet on it.

At least Sony is giving the gamer's an option should they want physical drive for PS6 or not. That's very important for gamers around the world who still prefer physical. Until the 3rd world countries gets better with Wi-Fi access, physical is a must for those poor countries without Wi-Fi.

I love the digital world, but that doesn't mean I want to see physical go away with the Dinosaurs.

It's good for the physical collectors I've gone fully digital this gen so doesn't really matter to me. It surprised me the amount of people who picked up the optional drive seemed to be out of stock everywhere for a while.

So they can milk their base for a disc drive

I long for the days when games were rarely released in a completely buggy, broken state, no day one patch, no need to download an additional 30 GB, etc. I think that's why I had so much fun with switch, and am now having a blast collecting all the old super nintendo/N64/PS1 games. :D

I can see Sony making an optional disc reading device for the PS6 as just a way to give full backwards compatibility with PS4 and PS5. However I think that they may go all digital with PS6 games. When it comes to physical games for Xbox and PlayStation currently my local Walmart and Best Buy are practically barren these days. Very little shelf space at all and a lot of games I just never see them get in.
